Question for Thomas Hawk

beta.zoomr.com/signupUpdate: (15 June 2007) I just chatted with a ex-workmate of mine, he can get to the site (I still can't....must be my end) but he has exactly the same issue as I do when he uses IE7 on the sign-up page. IE6 on another PC and Firefox on both PC's work fine.Over to you TH, because using another browser is not an option for some people and the problem will only get worse as more people use IE7.Update2: (16 June 2007) Using IE6 and Firefox at home my wife was able to login to the zoomr account. Using IE7 on several PC's here at work it just dumps me back to the main index page.Update3: (18th June 2007) Not bothering with zoomr, have found ipernity and amd currently migrating over.Update4: 23rd June 2007) Have a look at how Thomas Hawk responded to my criticism of Zooomr here, which do you think is worse, the non response of Flickr staff or the disabling an account with no response because of some criticism? Ragorder.com Ragorder.com maybe the button turns to a 'Submit' button when everything is filled in as needed ? A bit weird but I guess there's no one right answer when it comes to UI design or usability Posted: June 14 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers I looked at the code and know just enough to see that the button text changes to "Let's Start This Thing!" code:
if ( master_switch ) { $('system_good').show(); $('gobutton').disabled = false; $('gobutton').value = "Let's Start This Thing!"; } else { $('system_good').hide(); $('gobutton').disabled = true; $('gobutton').value = "Please complete the form above!"; }
code: Which part of the form do you thnk is not filled in correctly? There are 5 fields, each has a valid response in them, therefore the only conclusion I can draw is that their code is broken. They don't have a contact link, they don't have a "Recover password" link, you can't check to see if the username is already taken, these things are BASIC requirments as far as I am concerned, not "features" that will come with Mark IV. tuxcomputers tuxcomputers Lets see if Zoomr/TH are more open, honest and responsive to issues than Flickr. Posted: June 14 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers Make that 6 fields, I forgot to count the tick box. Posted: June 14 2007
Thomas Hawk Thomas Hawk hey tuxcomputers. I just tried to duplicate this problem but it is working for me. Best I can tell though there is a problem with your email not accepting for some reason. It accepts for me over here but I notice that it does not have a green "Nicely Put" next to it that you usually see when signing up. One thought would be to try it again in a different browser. I just tried that email address with Firefox and it worked great. Let me know though if you are still having trouble. Posted: June 14 2007
-spam- -spam- I managed to sign up to it just fine the other day. It is still very obviously a beta version of the site. Although all i kept thinking the whole time i was using it was, "gee, could they have ripped flickr off any more?" Posted: June 14 2007
The Central Scrutiniser The Central Scrutiniser i've had a zoomr accound for over a year but have only uploaded two photos. just logged on for the first time in a year... those phots are still there... Posted: June 14 2007
Ragorder.com Ragorder.com betcha it's the classic 'email address needs to be in the x@y.z format' issue with the javascript validation, and it therefore doesn't like yours cos you have an x@y.z.a format address. Bet my lunch money thats it. Posted: June 14 2007
wottheduk wottheduk Do you have cookies turned off? That would do it too. Posted: June 14 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers @Thomas: I cleared my cache, I forced a refresh, I had a look at the code but it's too complicated for me, I can't figure out why it is not giving ANY results of the e-mail check, good or bad. If you can't figure out where (or if) the code is broken I will just have to wait until I get home next Tuesday. @Ragorder: It doesn't matter what I put in the e-mail field it does not work, no message of "Hey, that's not and e-mail address", or "Sorry that email has already been used" and it does not give me "Nicely put!". It doesn't seem to run the code that validates the e-mail address, at all. I just edited and saved that code to my local HDD and then opened it as a web page, it popped up and said that it was trying to access an ActiveX control. Please say that was a mistake. I changed my mind, I will chat to my wife at home and get her to use FF to sign me up, hopefully there are no other IE7 issues on the site. Posted: June 14 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers @wottheduk No I use cookies for other sites. ahhhhh.... now I have a username and password I can't get to the site.... Posted: June 14 2007

tuxcomputers tuxcomputers BTW I am pretty sure that my connection problem yesterday was when I experimented with the code and opened it as a local page, I think it hooked into the ActiveX control and would not let go. When I rebooted this morning it gave me a bunch of errors, after logging in again I was able to get to the Zoomr site but not login. Posted: June 15 2007
Thomas Hawk Thomas Hawk tuxcomputers, when you say you can't log in, what do you mean? Is it possible to get a screen shot of what the error looks like or what the error message you get is? We are aware that there are some issues with IE7 and are working on those. Posted: June 16 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers No screenshot, theres no point because there is no error message. 1. I go to the login page, 2. I enter my username (not email address like it says) 3. I enter my password, 4. I hit the "Lets go Exploring!" button 5. I end up at the main page, here. Posted: June 16 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers I just discovered www.ipernity.com/, and have been exploring it for the last hour or so, now that is how a Flickr clone should be. 1. It allows video and audio uploading, 2. It has a built-in blog, 3. It shows you who has been looking at your photos, 4. it shows you who is logged in right now, 5. It uses Google maps to geotag your photos, 6. It allows you to upload a zip file which will be uncompressed and added to your stream. 7. They have an official uploading client, 8. The upload client has a Linux version, and 9. They have a dispute resolution system. No idea how the disputes are settled but idealy the photo / video / audio / blog would be marked as "Staff and user only" until the decision is made. Not the hammer to kill an ant deletion method flickr uses. One feature missing from it is groups. I can't find the groups, the groups I admin and participate in on flickr are one of the only reasons I am still here. Posted: June 16 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers I just learnt that ipernity does not have groups...shit. Posted: June 16 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers I just got a response from the ipernity admins, groups are coming in the next few weeks. Posted: June 17 2007
The Central Scrutiniser The Central Scrutiniser excellent news about the groups coming to ipernity i hope brisbane meetup group will establish a base there. i've decided to let my flickr account lapse to a free account and display a few photos there as well as maintaining the rage... have registered at ipernity but no uploads yet - that will come. i am quite enamoured of the interface at fotologue.jp/ however. feel like establish a gallery there - my best work perhaps. -- Seen in my recent comments. tuxcomputers tuxcomputers The more I explore ipernity the more I am impressed, you can actually tell when another of your contacts is online. If that bothers you there is an option to hide your status, you can hide it from everyone, you can hide it from people that are not in your contacts list. What impressed the most about this feature is that you can request a chat. I tried but the only person in my contacts list did not respond. If you are on ipernity and you see I am on-line request a chat. To request a chat click the "Who's on-line" link at the top, you will see a list of your contacts, click the "Chat" button. Posted: June 17 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers Ok I just used the chat feature, pretty basic and it keeps loading the whole chat each time a message is sent. Still it is a feature that flickr doesn't have and who knows if zoomr has it, I still can't get in. Posted: June 17 2007
tuxcomputers tuxcomputers I just wrote up a features list of ipernity here, just remember I have only been using it for about a day. Posted: June 18 2007
-spam- -spam- Ive pretty much decided that im going to smugmug no matter what happens with flickr. From a business point of view, it does exactly what i want and need it too (password protected galleries for instance) I will still follow the meetup group where ever it ends up though. BACKYard Woods Explorer BACKYard Woods Explorer I got the exact same thing at Zoomr, and I ended up going to Ipernity. Guess our paths may cross again somewhere over there. www.ipernity.com/doc/puddleboy Posted: June 22 2007
